Tuesday 18th June, 18:00 - 19:30
Get ready for a petal-packed adventure, a trio of walks looking at the wildflowers of local places in Deptford.
Local Wildflowers
A trio of walks looking at wildflowers of local places. The first will be looking at the grounds of the Creekside Centre the most diverse site for its size in inner London. The second will be walking around Sue Godfrey Nature Park in its 40th anniversary year. And last but not least a land based walk around the Creek. Find out about your your local wildflowers and what we do to conserve them. We will also be continuing the theme of the Whole Wild World Walks earlier this year.
Creekside Centre
Local residents started managing the site for wildlife in 1996. It then was used by the constructors of the Docklands Light Railway as a car park. Then the Environment Agency needed to do flood defence works to the site and finally the gas company decided to decontaminate the site when it was agreed the Creekside Discovery Centre woukd be buit here. So year one for the site was 2002 and conservation management started to be implemented in 2007. The approach taken was to work with the real wildlife of the area.
In excess of 99% of the wildflowers on site are entirely wild. We achieve the diversity that lives here through management and not planting. In excess of 300 species live here a mixture of native and wild species from around the world.
